L'Anse Aux Meadows

Vikings have all the best stories! Gather 'round the campfire and listen to tall tales and scary sagas of sailing the forbidden seas at L'Anse aux Meadows national historic site.

Participate in Viking storytelling around the campfire.

Think Columbus was smart to find North America? The Vikings beat him to it! Five hundred years before Columbus set sail, Vikings were camping in Newfoundland. Brave Norse men and women sailed from Greenland and Iceland, discovering the beautiful and bountiful shores of Atlantic Canada. Over a number of years, they built homes out of sod, made iron tools and gathered cargo to sell back in Greenland and Iceland.

In 1960, a Norwegian explorer was led to a bunch of overgrown lumps and bumps by a local person. An international team of archeologists spent the next eight years excavating the site and made the exciting discovery of a Viking settlement. They found tools and household items that were used by Vikings over 1,000 years ago!

When you visit, you'll find a Norse settlement replica where you can meet "Viking" settlers who will relate the sagas of their travels and show you how they lived. You can also try on the Viking gear and pick up the weapons!
